Restaurant with a rich history
The first mention of a “restaurant in the garden” dates back to 1759.
Originally, the restaurant was called the Brickworks, because a brickworks had previously been on this site.
There is an interesting story connected with the brickyard: it appeared on this site after a huge fire that destroyed more than 100 buildings and completely changed the face of the town. Some sources claim that before the fire there was an inn on this site. If this is indeed the case, then the Male Versailles can rightly be considered the oldest restaurant in the city.
The establishment was very popular with locals and visitors, who were attracted not only by the fine food but also by the outdoor dancing pavilion located nearby.
The dances became an integral part of the restaurant and were so popular that people began to call the place Little Versailles, jokingly comparing it to the famous French palace famous for its balls.
The name took such hold among visitors that after 5 years of existence the Cihelna restaurant was officially renamed to Malé Versailles.
During the years of Versailles’ existence, it was visited by prominent cultural figures, including the German poet Goethe.
In the 1930s, the Versailles pond became the home arena of the local hockey team.
In 2016, Versailles reopened its doors. With respect for tradition. With love for the best.
